Bench Strength. by Clubs Social
Preview · 2027
The specialist staff a grassroots club can't afford. On call before every session.
A bench for volunteer coaches. Five specialists, one huddle. It plans, supports and challenges you as a coach. It never decides for you.
The gap
Rugby clubs across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland are run by volunteers. Almost none has an analyst, a strength and conditioning coach, a physio or a sports psychologist. The video tools solve "we have no analyst". The admin tools solve "we have no website". Nobody solves the missing judgement.
The bench.
Strength and conditioning for a squad that trains once or twice a week.
Not a professional programme.
Physio and player-welfare thinking.
Never diagnoses. Anything real goes to a real physio, GP or A&E.
Pattern-spotting from what a volunteer coach can actually see.
No tracking data, no pretending.
Squad belief and morale.
Not a counsellor. Real distress goes to real support.
Individual performance psychology.
Same boundary as Culture.
The call stays the coach's. Always.
The Huddle. Example
Put one hard decision to all five at once. Each answers from its own seat, then a synthesis is offered. Here is the shape of it.
The question: Three defeats in a row. Do we change the team for Saturday?
Three matches in three weeks with one training night between each. Before you change names, check who has actually recovered. Fatigue reads like poor form.
Two of the front row played the full eighty three times running. If anyone is carrying a niggle, that's the selection decision, not the scoreline.
What did the three defeats have in common? If it's the same ten minutes after half-time each week, that's a pattern, not a personnel problem.
A changed team after three losses tells the room the coaches have stopped believing. If you change it, say why, to everyone, before the sheet goes up.
One or two players will be carrying the losses personally. Speak to them before Thursday, not after Saturday.
The bench leans against a wholesale change. Check recovery and any knocks first, look for the repeating pattern, then make one or two changes at most and tell the squad the reason. Your call.
In your back pocket.
An app in the coach's back pocket. Something to talk to on the way to training. It plans the season with you: the yearly plan, the training blocks, the session themes. It supports you on the hard weeks and challenges you on the easy ones. Drafted by the bench. Decided by the coach.
What it isn't.
Not video analysis.
Not club admin.
Not a replacement for a physio, a GP or a psychologist.
Three of the five seats exist to send anything serious to a real person.
The way in.
